Our research interests relate to the electronic and vibrational structure of matter and to the synthesis, functionalization and spectroscopy of novel materials with tailored properties (e.g. graphene nanoribbons and atomically thin 2D materials). Contemporary spectroscopy offers a powerful collection of experimental methods for probing the physical properties of functional materials. We employ third generation synchrotron radiation sources for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption and inelastic x-ray scattering. In addition, we utilize a laboratory-based system, combining in-situ sample preparation and functionalization with optical spectroscopy. This allows us to engineer and spectroscopically probe both, the ground and excited states of these material. Our research is supported by a collaborative research center (CRC1238), an ERC grant and national projects.
