M2.1: Specific heat of solids

The specific heat of a solid strongly changes with temperature and show distinct anomalies at phase transition. In this experiment, the specific heat of Potassium-dihydrogene-phosphate (KDP) is measured between about 80 K and 300 K. This material shows a ferroelektric ordering transition at 123 K.  The measured data will be compared to the temperature dependencies expected for the Debye and Einstein models of the phononic specific heat of a solid. In addition, the phase transition is characterized by analyzing the form of the specific heat anomaly.
